Pegasus, the winged horse, is the divine stallion sired by the god, Poseidon, and foaled by Medusa. Greco-Roman poets wrote about his ascent to the heavens after his birth. They also wrote about his obeisance to Zeus, King of the Gods, who instructed him to bring lightning and thunder from Olympus to earth. Ultimately, Zeus transformed him into the constellation Pegasus and placed him in the sky.
The symbolism of Pegasus has varied and still varies with time and the centuries. Symbol of wisdom and especially of fame in the Renaissance, friend of the muses, he became a symbol of poetry as well as a source, from which artists drew inspiration. Pegasus is the subject of a very rich iconography, especially through ancient Greek works, and paintings and sculptures of the Italian and French Renaissances.
